Orangu™ is a non-cytotoxic, sensitive, colorimetric assay for the determination of viable cell numbers in cell proliferation and cytotoxicity assays. Orangu™ utilizes WST-8, a  water-soluble tetrazolium salt that is reduced by dehydrogenase activities in viable cells, to give an orange-colored formazan dye. The amount of dye formed is directly proportional to the number of living cells. Increasing incubation periods or number of cells will lead to an increase in the amount of orange dye.

Assay principle


Orangu™ utilizes WST-8 which is metabolized by cells to give an orange-colored formazan dye. The amount of dye formed is directly proportional to the number of living cells. Increasing incubation periods or number of cells will lead to an increase in the amount of orange dye. The assay utilizes WST-8, a readily water-soluble tetrazolium salt, which, in the presence of an electron mediator, is reduced to an orange-colored formazan dye. Mitochondrial dehydrogenase enzymes within the cell act as an electron mediator such that the amount of the formazan dye generated is directly proportional to the number of viable cells and the length of incubation.
